What to Expect when meeting with CARE Services

What to Expect
CARE Services is primarily here to support students and listen. When asked and relevant, we can provide information and help someone navigate university and community systems. Support from CARE staff is free, confidential, and voluntary - and is available to students of all identities and experiences. We are not mandated to report incidents to university officials or the police.
Please know that you decide what to share with us. You are not required to talk about any information, details, or circumstances that you don't want to (including experiences that are unwanted, harmful, or traumatic). You can share as much or as little as you are comfortable with. You are in control of your information with us and if/how it will be shared. You can expect us to listen and support your decisions.
All situations are unique, but some services from CARE might include:
- Emotional support and confidential listening (supportive counseling)
- Helping identify and build coping skills that work for you
- Providing information about options and available resources
- Providing information on "what happens next" or what to expect from a process
- Personal advocacy and help accessing supportive measures at KU (such as academic assistance, KU Housing relocations, etc.)
- Info about post-assault medical care options and referrals to mental health care
- Info and support before/after or during reporting or other processes (KU, police interviews, protection orders)
- Going with and support during related meetings and appointments
